The 27-year-old man has been formally charged in Australia with unlawful foreign intelligence activities.
According to Australian police, the man received some form of military training in Russia and later traveled to Ukraine to join the army there. He then returned to Australia and attempted to pass on information to “persons he believed were acting on behalf of Russian intelligence.”
"We do not want Australia to become a haven for people who engage in foreign influence on behalf of other states," says Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett.
