The cargo ship sank between Spain and Algeria after an explosion in its engine room. According to documents, the ship's captain "admitted" to Spanish authorities that the cargo consisted of parts for two reactors of the type used in military submarines.
The Russian state-owned company Oboronlogistika, which is subject to EU sanctions, claimed after the accident that the ship had been subjected to a “terrorist attack”. Two crew members died in the sinking, while 14 were rescued by Spanish rescue services. At the time of the sinking, the ship was en route from St. Petersburg to Vladivostok in the Russian Far East.
