The seven-room apartment, located near the Finnish Security Police's headquarters, has been in Russian ownership for a long time. In addition to the news agency Tass, the Russian Embassy's staff had previously used it. Last autumn, it was advertised as a "luxury" apartment available for rent for 4,400 euros per month, equivalent to approximately 50,000 Swedish kronor.
In total, Finland has now seized Russian properties worth nearly 40 million euros, equivalent to approximately 459 million Swedish kronor, according to Yle. Among the properties seized earlier is an area on Åland, known as "Putin's beach plot".
The seizures are based on a ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague in April 2023. The court then ordered Russia to pay the Ukrainian energy company Naftogaz five billion euros in compensation for damages caused by the Russian occupation of Crimea in 2014. The Helsinki District Court has decided that Russian property worth around four billion euros will be seized.
Russia has protested against the confiscations in Finland.
