A high-ranking Russian general has, according to Russian information, been killed by a car bomb in the city of Balashikha, just east of Moscow. A murder investigation has been initiated regarding the incident, reports Russia's investigative authority.

"Jaroslav Moskalik, deputy chief of the main operational directorate within the military's general staff, was killed as a result of an explosion", the investigators announce.

No suspects are mentioned in the statement. The explosion is said to have occurred on Friday morning near the general's residence.

Images from the scene published in social media show a car destroyed in a fire near an apartment building.

"The explosion was caused by the detonation of a homemade explosive device" filled with metal fragments to cause maximum damage, according to the investigators.
