The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Chișinău wants an official explanation from the ambassador and "strongly protest against this unacceptable behavior", it says in a statement.

The border to Moldova is said to have been crossed by several drones during the night, which led to two exploding over a field, according to border police.

"Russia's war against Ukraine has once again reached Moldova. Shahed drones violated our airspace, exploded on our soil and risked Moldovan lives", writes President Maia Sandu on the platform X, where she also condemns Russia's war of aggression in the neighboring country as "criminal".

Shahed drones are attack drones that Russia uses in its warfare against neighboring Ukraine.

"Russia respects no borders, attacks civilians and spreads terror", continues Sandu.

The relationship between the two countries is tense. At the beginning of the year, Russia cut off gas deliveries to Moldova, including the pro-Russian breakaway region of Transnistria. At the same time, Russia accuses Moldova of not having paid bills totaling 700 million euros for previous gas deliveries.

Romania, which is a member of the defense alliance NATO and lies southwest of Moldova, also reports that violations of its airspace have occurred.
