Russian attacks leave 600,000 without power in Ukraine as at least 10 are killed

At least 10 people have been killed and more than 90 injured in Russian attacks in Ukraine over the past 24 hours, the Kyiv Independent reports.

"Energy facilities in Kyiv and the surrounding region have been hit in a large-scale ballistic missile attack. There is a power outage in the capital," Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko wrote on Telegram.

According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, 600,000 people are without power after last night’s attacks.

"The attack was completely intentional. Tragically, there have been deaths and injuries," he wrote on X.

“Clear lack of respect”

Zelenskyy says the attacks demonstrate Russia’s ability to sabotage a chance for de-escalation. The president has accused Russia since US President Donald Trump announced an "energy ceasefire" on Sunday.

"Russia has never before shown such a blatant lack of respect for the United States. Russia does not consider the statements of the American president to be powerful," the Ukrainian president wrote on X.

At the same time, access to the Starlink satellite communications network is reported to have been limited during the night.

"Our defense forces were not warned about this restriction, which led to a number of operations being disrupted," a technical adviser to the Ukrainian president said, according to AFP.

No notifications

According to Zelenskyy, Ukraine did not receive any advance warning of the attacks.

But the US has “not changed” its guidelines for intelligence sharing with Ukraine, an official told AFP on condition of anonymity. The EU said on Wednesday there was no indication that the US had stopped sharing intelligence with Ukraine.

Ukraine’s northern neighbor Russia has shot down more than 900 Ukrainian drones, the country’s Defense Ministry said in a statement.

According to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, “180 drones were destroyed on their way to Moscow.” Sobyanin wrote on Telegram that it was one of the largest drone attacks on Moscow in recent weeks.
