A prosecutor in Lublin in eastern Poland confirms media reports that 44-year-old Semyon Skrepetskij was shot dead in a parking lot in the small town of Biala Podlaska on Monday.
Two Belarusian citizens have been arrested, the prosecutor added. They have not been formally charged with any crimes at this stage.
Skrepetskij, whose real name was Robert Kuzovov, was first shot three times and then shot two more times at close range after he fell to the ground.
Just a few days earlier, the artist had participated in a demonstration in Berlin, where he held up one of his most famous works - an Orthodox icon painting in which a caricature of Joseph Stalin holds a young Vladimir Putin like a baby Jesus.
