Russia has sent a cargo plane with humanitarian aid to Afghanistan after the earthquake on Sunday where at least 2,200 people were killed.

Many countries do not want to provide aid to Afghanistan because the country is ruled by the Taliban, but Russia became earlier this year the first country to officially recognize the Taliban's rule after the takeover in 2021.

20 tons of food are now said to have been delivered to Kabul from Russia.

"On instructions from Russia's president, a second round of humanitarian aid is planned to be sent in the near future", the Russian rescue service announces.

The World Health Organization WHO has warned that local healthcare in Afghanistan is "under enormous pressure" with a shortage of both equipment, medicines and staff.
