In January, the IIHF Council concluded that Russia, which is waging war against Ukraine, should remain banned from international ice hockey - a suspension in place since 2022. The council cited "security reasons".
The Russian Ice Hockey Federation appealed the decision to the IIHF Disciplinary Board, which overturned the suspension based on the current wording of the decision.
However, the overturning does not mean that Russia will be free to participate in tournaments next season. The decision is back on the IIHF Council's agenda, where the issue will be reviewed again.
For now, the IIHF says decisions will be made on a tournament-by-tournament basis about whether Russia and Russian teams will be allowed to participate.
