Many millions of Russians were unable to access WhatsApp on Wednesday, reports the Financial Times.
Today, the Russian government has attempted to completely block WhatsApp to try to get people to use a state-owned surveillance app, a spokesperson for the Meta-owned company told the newspaper.
Other Meta companies like Facebook and Instagram have also been affected.
WhatsApp has around 100 million users in Russia.
On Tuesday, the Russian censorship authority Roskomnadzor announced that it would restrict the use of another important messaging service, Telegram. Both sides in the war in Ukraine use Telegram extensively.
