With hundreds of drones and robots, Russia has carried out a comprehensive attack, primarily against Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
In the western parts of the country, explosions have been heard in the city of Rivne and in areas along the southwestern border. In the center of the country, the city of Cherkasy has been attacked, as has the capital Kyiv, reports Kyiv Independent.
Reports of attacks are coming from several cities. Two people have been reported killed and several injured, including many children, according to local media.
In neighboring Poland, fighter jets took off to protect the country's airspace during the Russian attacks.
The night's attacks primarily targeted energy facilities and the extent of the damage is not yet known. There are currently no reports of injuries or deaths.
The attacks come as the country's President, Volodymyr Zelensky, has warned that Russia, according to Ukrainian intelligence, is preparing for extensive attacks on Ukraine during the Christmas holidays, and that the population must take precautions against airstrikes in the coming days, according to the country's public service channel Suspilne.
"It is in (the Russians') nature to carry out some kind of massive attack during our Christmas," Zelensky said in a speech on Monday.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has dismissed a ceasefire over Christmas on the grounds that it would give Ukraine a temporary respite, according to the Kyiv Independent.
