Russia and Ukraine have agreed on a new prisoner exchange in which 1,200 Ukrainians will be released, Ukrainian chief negotiator Rustem Umerov confirms on Telegram.

The agreement was reached during negotiations in recent days between the parties and the mediating countries Turkey and the United Arab Emirates.

"We are working non-stop so that the Ukrainians returning from captivity can celebrate Christmas and New Year at home," writes former Defense Minister Umerov on Telegram after the negotiations.

It is not clear how many Russian prisoners will be released in exchange from Ukraine.

The countries have carried out several prisoner exchanges after previous peace talks in May and June this year, but it had been several months since the last one.
