Ukraine is working to get a new prisoner exchange with Russia underway. According to an agreement between the countries, 1,200 Ukrainians could be released. “Many meetings, negotiations and talks are currently underway to ensure this,” President Volodymyr Zelenskyj writes on X.

The agreement was reached during recent days of negotiations between the parties and the mediating countries Turkey and the United Arab Emirates, and was confirmed by Ukrainian chief negotiator Rustem Umerov on Telegram .

"We are working non-stop so that Ukrainians returning from captivity can celebrate Christmas and New Year at home," writes former Defense Minister Umerov.

It is not clear how many Russian prisoners may be released in exchange from Ukraine, and Russia has not yet commented on the agreement.

The countries have carried out several prisoner exchanges after previous peace talks in May and June this year, but it had been several months since the last one.
