According to a press release from the European Swimming Federation, it is requesting a delay of the decision until September 1.
The European Championships in Paris, which include swimming, diving, artistic swimming and open water swimming, will be held in August.
Almost three weeks ago, World Aquatics decided that Russia and Belarus would be allowed to compete again without restrictions and under their own flags.
The decision has stirred emotions in Europe, and both Poland and Norway have said that they do not want to host championships they have already been awarded.
The European Federation's request for a delay would mean that only selected Russian and Belarusian swimmers would be allowed to compete in the European Championships, and they would compete under a neutral flag.
