The US Secretary of State has spoken by phone with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov over the past 24 hours, according to the US State Department. Among other things, the war in Ukraine was discussed, although few details of the conversation are known.
Now, Rubio says the US is willing to mediate in the war.
"Every time you see these major attacks from one side or the other, you are reminded of why this is a terrible war," he told reporters.
Russia has threatened to carry out new major attacks on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, following the weekend's extensive attacks. According to Rubio, Russia has, among other things, called on the United States to evacuate its embassy.
