"The 5,200 contracts that have now been terminated have cost tens of billions of dollars in ways that have not benefited (and in some cases harmed) the USA's national interests," writes Rubio on the X platform.
The announcement follows the US President Donald Trump's decree on cutting back American aid in January. The US Department of State announced at the end of January that the goal was to terminate economic support for 5,800 aid efforts – which corresponds to 93 percent of the efforts.
USAID has operations in around 120 countries, focusing on, among other things, health issues, education, media and democracy support, and acute disaster relief efforts.
Rubio also thanked the Department of Doge – led by tech billionaire Elon Musk – within the American administration for its efforts to cut back on aid.
