The Greenlanders do not want to be a part of Denmark, claims USA's Foreign Minister Marco Rubio. But he simultaneously promises that the USA does not intend to annex the island.

Rubio's words come to American journalists and, among others, news agencies AFP and Reuters at a press conference after this week's foreign minister meeting in NATO.

The Greenlanders will make a decision. They want to get away from Denmark. They want to become independent. And when they have made that decision, the USA will be ready, potentially, to start a partnership, promises Rubio.

What we will not allow is for China to come in and offer them a lot of money and (for them) to become dependent on China, says the foreign minister.

Rubio had a half-hour-long meeting with his Danish colleague Lars Løkke Rasmussen on Thursday. Afterwards, only a brief statement was issued from the US side about the USA and Denmark having a "strong relationship".

Løkke, on the other hand, held a press conference where he, among other things, reported that he had very clearly explained that Denmark does not accept frequent repeated "presidential statements about visions of acquiring Greenland".

It has reached a point that I can only describe as an attack on Denmark's sovereignty. And I made that very clear, said Løkke to TT and others on Thursday.
