In December, it was officially announced that national team midfielder Elin Rubensson had chosen to break her two-year contract with Houston to move back home to Häcken.
In an interview with GP, the 31-year-old now reveals that she became pregnant at the end of the summer, but suffered a miscarriage in November.
It was very tough. The hardest part was that we lived in the USA, in a foreign country. It required a lot of healthcare, and the whole system works differently there – but we've received good help, and as a family, we've come together. Of course, I wish Frans had had a sibling by spring, but hopefully, it will happen in the future, says Rubensson.
Even before the miscarriage, the Scanian and her husband Filip had begun planning to move back home to go through the pregnancy in Sweden.
She feels it's important to share her story.
Many think that we athletes are machines that can just keep going, but we're also just humans who go through tough periods. I've wanted to be the face outward. It's a bit why I choose to talk about this too. Sometimes things happen that you can't control – perhaps especially as a female athlete, she says.
