The number of reported cases of RSV is increasing, according to the Swedish Public Health Agency, which says the season is now underway.

Infants and the elderly are at risk of becoming seriously ill.

"Especially the youngest children are at risk of becoming seriously ill, and may have difficulty breathing. Children under 1 year of age should not meet people outside the family who have a cough or runny nose," says AnnaSara Carnahan, epidemiologist at the Swedish Public Health Agency, in a press release.

To protect newborns, a free preventive treatment is being offered for the first time. The treatments consist of injections given after birth and protect against serious RS infection for up to six months.
