”Royston's family asks for calm and peace at this moment so that he can get the support and space he needs to recover”, writes his amateur team FC de Rebellen in a statement according to the newspaper.
His former club Everton also expresses its support.
”Everyone at Everton wishes Royston Drenthe a swift and full recovery to full health after reports that he has been taken to hospital”, writes the Premier League club in a statement.
Drenthe made his breakthrough as a 19-year-old when he was recruited to Real Madrid in 2007, where a brilliant future was predicted for him. When José Mourinho took over the club, the midfielder was left out of the team and was later loaned out to, among others, Everton and Sheffield Wednesday.
After a career that took him to a number of clubs in different countries, Drenthe ended his professional playing career in 2023.
He has one international match for the Netherlands on his merit list.
