For a longer period, public libraries have reported problems related to lending of digital books. Therefore, the Royal Library will now develop common requirements for a service concerning such lending.
"Many people today take part in books digitally, in the form of e-books and audiobooks, but the possibility of doing so differs depending on where in the country you live. Therefore, we are now giving the Royal Library the task of working towards a national solution so that more people can take part in literature in the way that suits them", says Minister of Culture Parisa Liljestrand in a press release.
The task should not affect municipal self-government. It shall be reported to the government no later than December 1, 2026.
