The Vasa ship is slowly being crushed under its own weight and needs new support. The bill is 200 million kronor, and on Thursday a gala dinner was held at the museum, attended by the royal couple, among others.

The Vasa's wood has weakened. The old support structure is deforming the hull and is being replaced.

The cost is covered by ticket revenue and external funds. The dinner was attended by 200 guests the museum hopes will become ambassadors, including Minister of Culture Parisa Liljestrand (M).

"Giving Vasa new support is the biggest challenge for the Vasa Museum since the salvage of the ship in the 1960s, both technically and financially. All support is important and welcome in order to secure the ship for future generations," says museum director Jenny Lind in a press release.

Today's 17 supports will be replaced by 27 modern "cradles" by 2028, supplemented by an internal skeleton.
