Rosengård Competes for 25 Million in World Sevens Football Tournament

Rosengård's women's football team will get the chance to win millions in a few weeks. The team is one of eight that is part of the new billion investment Sevens Football where the winner takes home 25 million kronor. It's incredibly much money, says Rosengård's chairman Håkan Wifvesson to Sydsvenskan.

There are no mediocre clubs that Rosengård will have to deal with in the seven-a-side tournament, which will be decided for the first time in Portuguese Estoril on May 21-23.

On Tuesday, World Sevens Football presented the eight clubs that will compete for the victory. Bayern München, Benfica, and Manchester United were already clear, and now the remaining four have been added: Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, Roma – and Rosengård.

We received a call a month ago with a question about whether it could be actual for us, and it's clear that it's an incredible opportunity, says Malmö club chairman Håkan Wifvesson to Sydsvenskan.

Caroline Seger involved

Last month, The Guardian wrote about the project. According to information to the British newspaper, it will be invested 100 million dollars over a five-year period in the new venture.

Jennifer Mackesy, co-owner of Gotham FC in the women's league NWSL, is one of the people behind the venture and before the start, former top players such as Caroline Seger – long-time captain of Rosengård and the national team – have acted as advisors.

This year's tournament will be decided just before the Champions League final, which is played in nearby Lisbon on May 24. Should Rosengård win the tournament, it will be richly rewarded. But a significant addition to the association will be made regardless.

The winner receives 25 million, then there are significant sums also to the losing teams in the final and semifinals. But teams five to eight are guaranteed 1.3 million kronor plus all expenses are paid, says Håkan Wifvesson.

Affects Damallsvenskan

The setup will be two four-team groups where everyone meets everyone in seven-a-side football. The matches are played 2x15 minutes and the two best teams in each group go to the semifinal.

To get their game schedule together, Rosengård is now trying to move their Damallsvenskan match against Häcken, which is planned for May 24.

We have been in contact with Häcken, who of course absolutely thought we should participate. So we are working on moving that match, says Wifvesson.

After the premiere edition of World Sevens Football, the plan is for eight other teams to meet in a new tournament in November-December, wrote The Guardian in March.
