"People who behave like this should never be allowed to enter a stadium again. The league must act and punish this kind of fan behavior," wrote al-Hilal's Cristiano Ronaldo on Instagram.

The Portuguese star's plea was answered to some extent. The Saudi Football League fined al-Taawoun the equivalent of SEK 258,000 and ordered them to play their next two home games behind closed doors.

It was in this weekend's match against al-Hilal that al-Taawoun's supporters chanted Diogo Jota's name at al-Hilal midfielder Ruben Neves, who was a close friend of Jota.

Portuguese national team player Jota died in a car accident last summer.
