Portuguese football star Cristiano Ronaldo did not attend the funeral of his national teammate Diogo Jota – and was criticized for the decision. He did not want to create a “circus”, says the 40-year-old. If I had gone there, the focus would have shifted to me.

The statement comes in an interview with television personality Piers Morgan.

The al-Nassr star is asked why he did not show up at the funeral of Diogo Jota - who died in a traffic accident this summer.

"People criticize me a lot. I don't care about that. When you have a clear conscience, you don't have to worry about what people say. Since my father died, I haven't been to a cemetery," says Cristiano Ronaldo, whose father passed away in 2005.

Wherever I go, it's a circus. If I had gone there, the focus would have shifted to me. I don't want that kind of attention.

Jota's death also gave Ronaldo food for thought, he says.

That's why I don't plan things with my children for the long term, for example. Everything can change in an instant.
