Congo-Kinshasa shocked Portugal and managed a 1–1 draw despite a large Portuguese advantage.
In advance, much was said about whether 41-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo, who is playing in his sixth World Cup, still has what it takes to dominate on the biggest stage.
But he failed to match the early examples set by Messi (three goals), Mbappé (two goals) and Haaland (two goals). Ronaldo had chances to score but couldn't finish, leaving him goalless and without a win.
Next up, Portugal will face Uzbekistan on Tuesday evening, while Congo-Kinshasa will face Colombia early on Wednesday morning, local time in Sweden.
