Cristiano Ronaldo broke down in tears during the round of 16 match against Slovenia. After the match, the star made an admission – he is playing his last European Championship in his career.
Portugal advanced to the quarterfinals after a penalty shootout against Slovenia.
In an earlier stage of the match, superstar Cristiano Ronaldo missed a penalty that could have decided the match in extra time.
The penalty miss made the 39-year-old start crying. He then needed to be comforted by his teammates.
After the match, Ronaldo was asked if his emotions were due to it possibly being his last European Championship.
It's undoubtedly my last European Championship, says Ronaldo to Portuguese O Jogo, and continues:
But I'm not emotional about that, I get emotional about everything that football involves. It's not about leaving football, because if I do, what more would I have needed to do or win? It's not about getting one point more or one point less. Making people happy is what motivates me the most.
During the penalty shootout, Ronaldo got his revenge when he scored the goal.
Portugal's goalkeeper Diogo Costa made a super performance with several penalty saves, giving the 2016 European Championship winners a ticket to the quarterfinals.
Then Ronaldo's tears were replaced with great joy, and after advancing, the Al Nassr player celebrated with his countrymen.
Portugal will meet France in the quarterfinal on Friday at 21.00.
