On Tuesday night, Swedish time, the Netherlands lost their round-of-32 World Cup match against Morocco on penalties. Ronald Koeman is now leaving his role as national team coach.
"We all dreamed of a World Cup where we would make history. We didn't succeed. No one is more disappointed about that than me. As a national coach, you bear that responsibility," Koeman writes on Instagram and continues:
"The last few years have also made me realize that there are more important things than football. Football has been my life, but health is priceless. When someone you love with all your heart goes through a difficult struggle, your perspective changes. My wife Bartina, despite her own illness, has supported me and encouraged me every day."
