Bartina Koeman was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 65.
"It is with deep sadness, but also great pride and love, that we say goodbye to my wonderful wife, beloved mother and grandmother," the former football star and now coach writes on Instagram.
Koeman led the Netherlands at the World Cup last summer and said before the opening match that he hoped his wife would be able to pause her cancer treatment for a week and travel to the United States if the team reached the final.
However, the Netherlands were eliminated in the round of 16 against Morocco. Koeman subsequently left the national team, partly because of his wife.
"The last few years have made me understand that there are more important things than football. Football has been my life, but health has no price," he wrote on Instagram at the time.
