“This morning, around 11:00, a Romanian pilot in an F-16 aircraft shot down a drone that had entered our country's airspace,” the president writes on X.

He says the area was uninhabited, so the drone could be shot down without risk.

The drone was shot down over the village of Padina, about 110 kilometres from the capital Bucharest, according to the Defence Ministry. The area is being investigated after the incident, the president said.

It is the first time a drone has been shot down in Romania since Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, AFP reports.

Drone incursions have been detected in Romania several times since the war began, but Romanian forces have so far failed to shoot down any.
