"It's actually a bit crazy. You believe it, but no team has done it before," Rögle goalkeeper Arvid Holm told TV4.
Rögle coach Dan Tangnes achieved the feat in Zug, Switzerland, in 2021. The Norwegian brought valuable experience to Ängelholm - because now he has written himself into Swedish hockey history.
"Everyone can lead when things are going well, but it's a little harder to navigate when things are a little tough. You're very proud to be part of two teams that manage to do that, even if I'm not the one who's the deciding factor," Tangnes told TV4.
“I don’t understand anything”
In the seventh and decisive match in Ängelholm, it was Rögle who took command. Fredrik Olofsson made it 1–0, before the away team's David Tomášek equalized. Through Filip Johansson, the home team took the lead again, and at the beginning of the second period, Paul LaDue extended it to 3–1.
Radim Zohorna thought he had reduced the score to 2–3, but the referees were quick, perhaps too quick, to blow the whistle. Not even a video review helped the Värmland team.
"I don't understand anything. They blow the whistle as soon as the puck touches the keeper. I think it's a clear goal," Färjestad's Axel Bergkvist told TV4 during the second period break.
Lost a 5–0 lead
Despite enormous pressure from the away team, Färjestad did not get to celebrate any more. Instead, Rögle's Linus Sandin punctuated the match when he scored to make it 4–1 into an open net.
The loss means that Färjestad will be eliminated in the quarter-finals for the fourth season in a row.
"I'm having a bit of a hard time processing this right now. I'm proud that we turned things around in February and that there was a chance in the quarter-finals straight away. But 3–0 to 3–4 is tough, really tough," team captain Linus Johansson told TV4.
After a lousy start to the quarter-final series against Färjestad with three straight losses, including losing a 5–0 lead in match two, Rögle has now turned things around and won the Swedish Championship quarter-finals.
In the semifinals, Rögle will face Växjö.
