At the close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average had fallen 0.8 percent, the broad S&P 500 index 0.7 percent and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index 1 percent.
A broad decline was seen in heavy tech stocks such as Alphabet, Amazon, AMD, Micron, Microsoft, Nvidia and TSMC. Several of them are among the ten most valuable listed companies in the world.
The yield on US ten-year government bonds rose during the day to the highest level since January last year, and that on the Japanese ten-year bond to the highest since 1996. German and Swedish yields reached their highest level since 2011.
A barrel of North Sea oil is now worth $95.05 in futures trading after a 5.1 percent gain during the day. US WTI oil is worth $90.60, up 5.6 percent.
