All 66 children, 13 or 14 years old, have been arrested suspected of violent crimes, between January and August this year. It is a sharp increase compared to the same period last year, reports Sveriges Radio Ekot.

The figure for the same period and age group in 2024 was 27.

The violent incident in Gävle on the night of Saturday where six people were shot injured is the latest in a series where a child under 15 years is suspected to be the perpetrator, in this case a 14-year-old boy.

The police have also discovered four suspected perpetrators in the age range 7–12 years, something that was previously very unusual.

We see that you're no longer recruited to become a member of some gang, but to carry out things. And much of that recruitment takes place on the internet, says Mats Berggren, deputy chief of the Police's National Operational Department, NOA, to the radio.

Berggren notes that many young people are lured by the promised compensation, which can be millions of kronor. But it's very unusual for any money to be paid out.

It's very rare that we see that you actually get paid. You're a consumable for the criminal environment.
