Ahead of the opening match, several protests had been planned in Mexico City, and when the match got underway, unrest broke out in the streets outside the World Cup stadium.

According to several media outlets, protesters blocked the roads to and from the stadium while a number of people tried to storm the gates to get into the stadium.

The situation in Mexico has been tense. Many have tried to use the championship as an opportunity to protest against the authorities, including teachers and workers in the transport industry who believe that wages should be increased.
