As of April 15, dangerous criminals can be sentenced to indefinite imprisonment. The Center Party voted against the proposal and the Green Party abstained.
Indefinite custody should be possible for people who, for example, have reoffended in serious violent or sexual crimes.
"The penalty could already have been in place during the last term, but then the Social Democrats flatly said no. I am glad that today we have received broad support for a vital proposal," said Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer in a comment to TT.
The Tidö parties have rushed the law's entry into force; according to the investigation, the law was originally intended to come into force in January 2028.
