Rikard Grönborg returns as the national team captain for Tre Kronor. He takes over the men's national team in ice hockey after the World Championship next spring. "To lead Tre Kronor again is an enormous honor", says the 57-year-old in a press release.

On Monday, the association announced that Sam Hallam will leave as national team captain after the Olympic Games in February and the World Championship in May next year.

Now the replacement Rikard Grönborg has been presented.

Took double World Championship gold

"It feels very positive to have the next national team captain clear so early before the upcoming seasons. Rikard was at the top of our list of candidates, and he has shown a great heart for Swedish ice hockey and the national team in our conversations", says national team manager Anders Lundberg in a press release from the Swedish Ice Hockey Association.

"Our goal is clear - we will be the best in the world", says Lundberg.

Grönborg led Tre Kronor to World Championship gold as national team captain in both 2017 and 2018.

"To lead Tre Kronor again is a great honor. This is more than a task - it is a passion and a responsibility I take on with great humility. I have fantastic memories from the gold years, and look forward to creating new memories together with the team and organization", says Rikard Grönborg.

The contract extends over the 2030 season.

Earlier on Tuesday, it was announced that Grönborg will leave the coaching job for the Finnish Tappara after this season.

On its website, Tappara thanks Grönborg, who they believe has fulfilled the task of "renewing Tappara hockey".

Won gold in Finland

"But the time for farewell and evaluation will come later. Now we have full focus, and ambitious goals, for this season", says Tappara's general manager Janne Vuorinen in a statement.

After the gold years with Tre Kronor, the Swede was head coach in the Swiss ZSC Lions for several years before taking over Tappara before the 2023-2024 season.

There, it became league gold already in the first season, while last year it stopped in the quarterfinals.
