Riders under the age of 13 will no longer be allowed to compete at the elite level. The Swedish Equestrian Federation will introduce an age limit of 13 from 2027. “With this decision, we want to give children a positive and sustainable start in their sport,” says the federation’s chairwoman Sandra Ruuda.

Starting in 2027 and no later than 2029, riders under the age of 13 are not allowed to participate in international competitions, national championships and nationwide series.

The introduction will take place gradually so that those active at the elite level can compete fully within their age category before the new age limit comes into effect, the Swedish Equestrian Federation writes in a press release.

“This is not about removing competition, but about letting children develop at their own pace,” says Sandra Ruuda.

The association claims that through the decision it follows the line already adopted by most major sports associations within the Swedish Sports Association (RF).
