It is the spire of Riddarholm Church that is to be restored. On Thursday, the 3.5-meter-high cross was lifted down from the spire, almost 90 metres above the ground.
In the near future, the entire structure, a total of 115 tonnes of cast iron, will be dismantled.
"This is a cast-iron puzzle with around 2,000 pieces, where we have to understand how each lift affects an almost 190-year-old structure," says Viktor Axelsson Banck at the Swedish Property Board in a press release.
The spire was added in 1838-1840 and will be cleaned of PCBs and asbestos, among other things. It was last restored in the 1960s.
The work is expected to continue until 2028.
