The Trump administration is terminating an extension of the temporary protected status for over 500,000 Haitians, which was granted by the former American President Joe Biden.

The USA can grant temporary protected status to foreign citizens who cannot return home safely due to war, natural disasters or other "extraordinary" circumstances.

Haitians had been granted an extension until February 2026, but now it will expire on August 3 this year. The extension was "much longer than what is justified or necessary", says a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

After a devastating earthquake in 2010, Haiti has suffered from political instability and in recent years, increased violence from armed groups.
