During the investigation, he has admitted to rapes of boys under the guise of rectal examinations, according to the investigator.
The doctor has kept notes about the assaults but dismisses some of them as "exaggerations" and "fantasies".
The case against him in the city of Vannes is one of the country's largest sexual abuse cases of all time, where children are the victims. The doctor is suspected of having raped 299 patients at dozens of hospitals between 1989 and 2014.
Despite being convicted in 2005 for possession of child pornography, the man was allowed to continue working as a doctor until his retirement in 2017.
