Residents in many municipalities will receive lower taxes next year. According to Emelie Värja, chief economist at SKR, this is because the municipalities are no longer under the same pressure. Things are looking better financially for 2026, she says.

In 45 municipalities, residents will receive a lower tax next year, while taxes will be higher in 16 municipalities, according to a review by Statistics Sweden (SCB).

On average, the tax rate will decrease by 3 öre next year to 32.38 percent, when you combine the changes in municipal and regional taxes.

It looks better financially if you look ahead to 2026 than it has done historically, says Emelie Värja.

Västerbotten raises

In Stockholm County, 26 municipalities will receive reduced taxes as a result of the Stockholm Region reducing taxes by 5 öre. Some municipalities in the Stockholm area will also reduce their own municipal taxes.

Those affected by increased taxes are in 15 of the cases due to Region Västerbotten raising taxes by 50 öre, which therefore affects all municipalities in the region.

The reason for the overall lower tax is primarily that inflation has decreased and that the economy has begun to turn around, according to Emelie Värja.

This affects the real pension costs for municipalities and regions, she says.

According to SKR, the major challenge for municipalities going forward is to adapt to an aging population. A smaller number of children and an increased number of elderly people require resources to be reallocated.

Tougher for the regions

According to Emelie Värja, the regions are in a more challenging situation than the municipalities.

The regions have a different type of business, where the level of ambition is constantly being raised in terms of medical technology development. We can cure more people and at a later age, which is fantastic for the individual, but very costly for the regions, she says and continues:

Then the regions must look at their own operations and what can be made more efficient. But it is challenging to focus all of medical technology development solely on efficiency.

The municipality that reduces taxes the most is Lekeberg, by 1 krona. Next comes Haninge, which reduces by 50 öre.

The lowest tax rate is still in Österåker, at 28.93 percent next year. The highest total tax rate is in Dorotea, where it amounts to 35.65 percent.
