The military personnel were captured in the desert when they fled during the regime's collapse, and 54 people were "executed", according to SOHR.
The Syrian regime, led by President Bashar al-Assad, fell over the weekend after a rebel offensive led by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) movement. Among the rebels are the terrorist group IS.
Ten years ago, the terrorist movement proclaimed its so-called caliphate after taking control of large parts of Iraq and Syria. An international, US-led military coalition succeeded, together with, among others, the Kurdish YPG militia, in combating IS. The group lost control of its last territory in Iraq in 2017, and in Syria in 2019.
However, IS has continued to be active through dormant cells since then.
