The avalanche occurred on Thursday at Broad Peak in Pakistan, the world's twelfth-highest mountain. A total of ten people died in the accident, according to the BBC.
On Saturday, Elite Expeditions announced that Nirmal Purja was one of the dead. He was 43 years old.
"It is with deep sadness and immense grief that we confirm that Nirmal Purja tragically lost his life after the avalanche," writes Elite Expeditions.
Purja had 2.4 million followers on Instagram and rose to fame in 2019 by climbing the world's 14 highest mountains in just over six months. His feat was highlighted in a Netflix documentary that premiered in 2021.
