The Austrian pianist Alfred Brendel, who is considered one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century, is dead. He passed away on Tuesday in London, where he had lived for more than 50 years.
He died peacefully... and surrounded by his loved ones, says his spokesperson Thomas Hull.
Alfred Brendel, who was born in 1931, moved with his family to Graz after the Second World War, where he studied at the city's conservatory
He was best known for his performances of the great European composers such as Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms and Liszt.
Brendel had a reputation for being humble and very self-critical. At his concerts, which were always sold out, he only bowed briefly and quickly when he entered or left the stage.
He stopped performing in concerts in 2008. Alfred Brendel was 94 years old.
