It was in the 71st minute of the match, with the score tied at 1-1, that the accident occurred when Real Madrid players Raúl Asencio and Eduardo Camavinga collided in a header duel with Benfica's Rafa Silva between them.

Asencio remained down the longest; the game was stopped and the 23-year-old was carried off on a stretcher with a support collar. Camavinga was also substituted but was able to leave the pitch on his own.

A few minutes later, Vinicius Júnior decided the match with his 2–1 goal, sending the Spanish giants through to the round of 16 with a 3–1 aggregate win.

Reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain also coped with the pressure in their round of 16 second leg against Monaco. PSG drew 2-2 and advanced to the round of 16 with a 5-4 aggregate win. Atalanta had earlier advanced on Wednesday night after beating Borussia Dortmund 4-3 on aggregate.

Juventus overcame a 2–5 deficit from the first leg to draw 5–5 at home against Galatasaray and the match in Turin went into extra time. However, the away team scored twice, through Victor Osimhen and Baris Yilmaz, to send the Istanbul side through 7–5 on aggregate.

The Champions League round of 16 draw will be made on Friday.

Next, playoff (unseeded): Atlético Madrid, Newcastle, Bayer Leverkusen, Bodø/Glimt, Atalanta, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, Galatasaray.

Seeded (from the league phase): Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Tottenham, Barcelona, Chelsea, Sporting, Manchester City.

In Friday's draw, which begins at 12:00, one team from the seeded pot will be drawn against one team from the unseeded pot. The round of 16 will begin on March 10–11 with the return legs on March 17–18.
