Wimbledon continues to offer surprises already in the first round.
Yesterday, world number eight Qinwen Zheng was knocked out by qualifying player Lulu Sun, and today came the next major upset.
World number six Marketa Vondrousova fell in two straight sets to Spanish player Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, ranked 83rd in the world.
The 25-year-old did not get her game going at all, and had trouble responding from the start. Vondrousova began by losing her serve game, and never managed to respond in the first set, which ended 6–4 to Bouzas Maneiro. Even in the second set, the reigning champion was outmaneuvered, and lost with the final score 4–6, 2–6.
Vondrousova entered the tournament as one of the main favorites, after winning last year's edition in a surprising manner. But this year, it didn't go as well for the Czech player.
Earlier, Wimbledon has also lost world number three Aryna Sabalenka, who had to withdraw from the tournament due to injury even before the first match.
