Russia and Iran – which actively support the regime in Damascus – are participating, as is Turkey, whose support is directed towards a number of rebel groups in Syria. Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan also decided to send representatives to Doha on Saturday, reports BBC.
Russia is represented by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who said that "terror groups" must not be allowed to take power in Syria.
Lavrov and Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with Turkey's Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Saturday. The three agreed to hold a "political dialogue between the Syrian regime and legitimate opposition groups."
The three countries are part of the Astana process, which was launched in 2017 to find solutions for Syria's future.
The UN's special envoy to Syria, Norwegian diplomat Geir Pedersen, is also participating in the talks.
