A private individual in a village in northern Bulgaria happened to spot the bones by a dried-up riverbed on Wednesday. In addition to jawbones and fragments of tusks, there were also parts of a shoulder blade and a thigh bone.
An important discovery, according to Nikolay Nenov, director of the Ruse Regional History Museum.
Unlike many previous finds, they were concentrated in the same place, he told AFP on Thursday, indicating they came from the same animal.
The animal in question is probably a young woolly mammoth that lived during the Ice Age. The dark colour of its bones suggests that it lived in a wetland environment.
The woolly mammoth became extinct around 4,000 years ago.
