Trollstigen is closed annually for the winter due to heavy snowfall and the risk of avalanches. It usually opens to traffic in late spring, when the snow has melted. According to statistics, which began in 1992, the previous record for the earliest spring opening is May 8.
The road has been open since noon on Monday.
However, safety challenges remain. The road has been closed several times due to landslides or landslide risks, and last week a majority of the regional government supported imposing a toll on the road. The aim is to finance better landslide protection.
Trollstigen usually closes for the season in October or November.
