The golden eagle depends on both the weather and a good supply of food - such as small rodents - for its breeding success. Therefore, its numbers can vary quite a bit from year to year.

In 2025, everything seems to have gone very well, according to the latest survey.

It was a good year with both favorable weather and a good food supply, says Jessica Åsbrink, who is national coordinator of the survey at the Swedish Museum of Natural History.

Most successful breeding attempts were in northern Sweden and on Gotland. A total of 280 out of 316 registered breeding attempts were successful, the highest number since the survey began.

This may be partly because those who carry out the survey have become better. But over time it is an increasing trend, and that is very pleasing, says Jessica Åsbrink.
