Over two million Canadians went to the polling stations when the advance voting for next Sunday's parliamentary election began on Friday. It is an increase of 36 percent compared to the previous election in 2021.

The record-large interest comes after the increased tensions with the American neighbor since President Donald Trump introduced higher trade tariffs and said that Canada should become a state in the USA.

On Friday, long queues wound their way outside the polling stations in several major cities. According to the latest opinion polls, the Liberal Party is leading with around 44 percent, closely followed by the Conservative Party at 38 percent.

The Liberal Party has received a significant boost in the opinion polls after Trump's outburst, but also since the former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau resigned at the beginning of January and was replaced by Mark Carney.

Among the smaller challengers are, among others, the left-wing New Democratic Party and the Québec Bloc, which are at eight and five percent in the polls, respectively.
